Chevrolet’s innovative extended-range electric vehicle—the Chevy Volt—has added to its trophy case by being named 2011 North American Car of the Year.
The is a unique industry recognition because instead of being chosen by just one media outlet or third-party organization, the North American Car of the Year recognition is determined by 49 of the top automotive journalists from across Canada and the U.S. As always, this year’s prize was announced just prior to the start of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
“It’s a great honor to be recognized as the North American Car of the Year,” said GM CEO Dan Akerson. “Since development began, we believed the Volt had the potential to transform the automotive industry. Today, the Volt is the first electric vehicle to win the prestigious North American Car of the Year award, and the first vehicle ever to receive the industry’s highest automotive, technology, and environmental recognitions.”
Those have included:
* Motor Trend 2011 Car of the Year
* Green Car Journal 2011 Green Car of the Year
* Car and Driver 10Best for 2011
* Ward’s AutoWorld 10 Best Engines for 2011
* AUTOMOBILE Magazine 2011 Automobile of the Year
* 2010 Breakthrough Technology, by Popular Mechanics
The Volt earned these kudos, along with plenty of consumer attention, primarily thanks to its innovative powertrain. The Chevy’s advanced lithium-ion battery back can provide Volt drivers with an EPA-estimated all-electric, emissions-free driving range of 35 miles. Then, if necessary, the car’s gasoline-powered onboard generator kicks in to deliver an extra 344 miles of “no anxiety” cruising.
“Being named the North American Car of the Year will help convince customers that the Volt is truly a breakthrough vehicle, delivering the benefits of electric driving without the range anxiety associated with pure electric vehicles,” added Akerson. “This is particularly important for vehicles like the Volt that feature significant new technologies.”
The award-winning 2011 Chevrolet Volt is on sale in select markets now and will roll out to the rest of the country later this year.
